Saving wildlife:

Power Platform solution transforms

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital’s data and reporting management

The vet database of Currumbin Wildlife Hospital was heavily customised and not meeting their requirements. They decided to migrate their Access Database tool into a scalable, enterprise system. A Discovery & Design engagement was conducted, and SOCO collaborated with the hospital to leverage the Power Platform to address their challenges, creating a user-friendly solution to support their future growth.

Challenge

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital was using Microsoft Access for their data storage and management needs. The on-premises system was heavily customised and lacked the modern features required for efficient and scalable data management. Other challenges include:

  • Clunky and slow: Users experienced delays in data retrieval and processing, impacting efficient operations and causing frustrations.
  • Scattered data and lack of centralisation: The absence of a centralised system made it challenging for hospital staff to effectively track and monitor wildlife admissions, treatments, and outcomes.
  • Reporting Challenges: Staff had to manually compile data from multiple sources, leading to delays in reporting.
  • Manual Data Entry: Variation in data entry practices may occasionally result in discrepancies in animal records.
SOCO Solution

Using our 4D methodology®, SOCO proposed analysing their current setup and developing a roadmap and migration plan from the current Access database solution into a Dynamics 365 oriented solution (Power Platform). The plan included:

  • Developing custom applications using Power Apps to replace the outdated system, providing a more intuitive and user-friendly interface for hospital staff and ambulance personnel to input and access data remotely.
  • Establishing data relationships using custom pages to provide flexibility and scalability to the system.
  • Real-time reporting and analysis capabilities using Power BI, enabling staff to gain insights into animal admissions, discharge, treatments, outcomes, and resource utilisation.

“The work done by SOCO on our new Vet Database has enabled us to enhance our operational efficiency and deliver better outcomes for the wildlife we care for every day.”

Michael Pyne, Senior Veterinarian, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

Technology snapshot
  • Model-Driven App: A Microsoft platform allowing users to create custom business applications without the need for extensive coding knowledge. Businesses can build apps tailored to their specific needs using a drag-and-drop interface and pre-built templates.
  • Custom Pages: A feature within the Power Platform, provides greater flexibility and facilitates easier interactions with images and data from different sources, thereby enhancing the user experience and enabling dynamic data utilisation as required.
  • Power BI: A business analytics tool that allows users to visualise and analyse data from various sources to gain insights and make informed decisions in real-time.
Outcome

After the implementation of the Power Platform solution, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital received a fit-for-purpose system, with significant improvements including:

  • Efficiency: The new system streamlined data entry processes, reducing manual errors and improving efficiency in managing animal admissions and treatments.
  • User-Friendliness: Hospital staff and ambulance personnel found the Power Apps interface to be more intuitive and user-friendly compared to the previous Microsoft Access system.
  • Centralised Data: The Power Platform solution centralised data storage, making it easier to access and manage large animal records.
  • Improved Reporting: Power BI’s reporting capabilities enabled the generation of comprehensive and insightful reports, facilitating better decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Scalability: The architecture built using Power Apps, Power Pages, and Power BI provided scalability, allowing the hospital to adapt and grow without significant redevelopment efforts.

Overall, the adoption of the Power Platform transformed Currumbin Wildlife Hospital’s data management practices, enhancing operational efficiency, and enabling better outcomes for the animals under their care.
